Food system challenges to achieve food security in Africa

Ensuring food security today requires a systemic approach to the challenges that affect agricultural production, food processing, food quality, and access to nutrition. The Summer School “Food System Challenges to Achieve Food Security in Africa”, promoted by the University of Parma, is part of the ACHIEVE-IT Project and represents one of its key actions aimed at building shared capacities and knowledge between Italy and Africa.

The program will begin on 8 June 2025 with the participants’ arrival in Italy and will continue until 18 June, alternating training sessions with moments of intercultural socialization. The academic activities will take place on 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, and 17 June at the University of Parma and will include:

  • Morning sessions (9:30 am – 12:30 pm) dedicated to peer education and research sharing
  • Lunch break from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
  • Afternoon group work and workshops (2:30 pm – 5:30 pm)
  • The weekends of 9, 14, and 15 June will be reserved for leisure time and community building.

The course will cover topics such as:

  • Sustainable agricultural practices and resilient crops
  • Innovation in response to climate change
  • Fermentation and food safety
  • Toxin contamination and EU regulations

The program will be enriched by guided tours of the University of Parma’s laboratories and local agri-food companies, offering participants a comprehensive educational experience based on the integration of academic knowledge and applied practices.
