Land Protection Against Natural Hazards

Land Protection Against Natural Hazards Parma, 6–16 July 2025 – UNITAFRICA Project

Climate change is making the technical and scientific preparation to address extreme natural events increasingly urgent. The Summer School “Land Protection Against Natural Hazards” has been conceived precisely to respond to this need, providing African faculty and researchers with advanced tools for land protection against landslides, floods, and geo-hydrological risks.

The program will take place from 6 to 16 July 2025. Following arrival and welcome procedures, activities will begin on 7 July with a day dedicated to free time and community building. Training sessions will follow on 8, 9, 10, 14, and 15 July. On 11 July, a full-day technical field visit will take place, including an on-site inspection of the dam on the Parma River – a key element for understanding hydraulic management and risk prevention dynamics.

Each day will include:

  • 9:00–12:00: Theoretical lectures and case study analysis
  • 12:00–14:00: Lunch break
  • 14:00–17:00: Laboratories, workshops, and group activities

Topics will include:

  • Types of landslides and their monitoring
  • Early warning systems
  • Hydraulic modeling and river basin management
  • Tools for territorial planning
  • Impacts of climate change

Over the course of these ten days, teaching staff and researchers from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Cameroon will focus on land management and the protection against geo-hydrological risks. The program combines theory, practical applications, and the use of innovative software to tackle landslides and floods.

The Summer School will be led by a team of experts from the University of Parma:Roberto Valentino, Andrea Segalini, Alessandro Valletta, Francesca Aureli, Susanna Dazzi, Alessia Ferrari, Marco D’Oria, Valeria Todaro, with extensive experience in geotechnics, environmental engineering, and risk management.
